Whole Home Surge Protection

Whole Home Surge Protection

All of our homes possess many electronics, from our phones to our washing machines. What would you do if, all of a sudden, one day all of these devices had to be replaced? At the same time? It’s not a situation that most would be prepared for. You may think that electrical power strips are protecting you from such power surges, but surprisingly, these do not do much in the event of a serious power surge. Instead of relying on these small products for protection, consider having your an electrician install a whole home surge protector.

Though we often think of serious power surges, throughout the course of a year, small, unnoticeable surges happen all the time. These cause damage over time, and can also be controlled by installing a whole home surge protector. The whole house durge protectors can be installed at the utility meter, or the breaker box. You can never go wrong by installing them in both areas. Surge protectors act like a pressure relief valve, immediately diverting excess energy to the ground. The investment in this type of surge  protection is worth not having to replace thousands of dollars’ worth of appliances and electronics later. John's Electric can advise you to the best solution for your home.

Spring is the perfect time for an electrical safety inspection

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

Electrical circuitry and panels tend to get ignored throughout the year and only get addressed when you experience a short circuit or electrical trips. As a homeowner, you may not know everything involved in the electrical circuitry of your home but there are still some questions you should ask your electrical inspector and Spring is the perfect time to do it!

No matter the size of the job, from changing out old electrical paneling to major renovations to your home or property, you should always ask your electrical inspector whether or not your home’s electrical fittings are up to date and in compliance with current regulations and building codes.

Secondly, be sure your electrical inspector pays attention to the safety of your electrical panel and makes sure that they are properly insulated to avoid electrical shock. Panels must also never be placed near damp or wet areas.

Understanding your electrical consumption is also important. Washing machines, televisions and air conditioners consume significant amounts of electricity, and it is your responsibility as the homeowner to be sure they are connected to the right circuitry to avoid electrical shorts or fluctuations in voltage.

Lastly, once the inspection is completed and any necessary repairs made, have your inspector run a double check to be sure all of your electrical circuitry is working properly. Ask your inspector to provide you with a complete report of all inspections and repairs done.

Why is my main breaker on the breaker panel tripping all the time

Monday, April 17, 2017

Any of these issues can cause significant injury or death by electrocution or fire. If that consistent breaker tripping occurs in your home, try turning the breaker off and then on again. If it stays on, the issue may be resolved. If not, and the breaker still trips, try to determine which part of the electrical system is causing the problem. Your safety is of utmost importance. With any electrical issue, calling your electrician (and hey we know a awesome one...you can find that awesome electrician here) first can keep you out of serious danger.

First, they were there within the hour of calling them. Secondly, I thought I had 2 bad florescent lights, but it turned out to be tripped GFI outlets. Instead of just going ahead and replacing the lights, the electrician found the tripped outlets and let me know that was all the problem was. He showed me where they were so, if I had a problem in the future I could look there first. I appreciate his honesty. It saved me a lot of money.
