Autumn Electrical Safety Check List.

Autumn Electrical Safety Check ListAutumn has arrived and with it has come the time to consider what you don't see every day, behind the walls: your home's electrical system. Sure, your appliances may seem to be running in excellent condition, your outlets may not show any sign of trouble, but after long hot months of running your A/C, pool pump, ceiling fans, and electronics. Autumn is the perfect time to have everything looked over carefully, checked and tweaked for optimum performance.

Here is a checklist suggested to help you tune up your home's electrical system and keep it running safely this Fall:

  • Trees - check to be sure tree growth or dying branches aren't threatening the wires around your home. If the wind can blow a branch into your electrical wires, you need to schedule a tree service to have the threatening branches trimmed back to avoid downed power lines and electrical fires.
  • Electrical Panel - look inside your electrical panel carefully for any signs of burns or scorching around the fuses or breakers, which could indicate a loose or sparking wire. If these are noticed, contact an electrical professional immediately.
  • Outlets - look closely at all outlets in your home (even if they are not often used) to check for tell-tale signs of loose or sparking wires indicated by the presence of burn or scorch marks and if any are discovered, immediately contact your electrician.
  • GFCIs - the easiest way to make sure your GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) are properly working is to carry a small lamp with you to each outlet, plug the lamp in, and press the "test" button on the outlet, making sure the lamp turns on and off each time you press the test button. Use this same test for each outlet to ensure they all work.
  • Make a list - look around your entire house for leaks, breaks, cracks, wear, loose outlet covers, boxes, and receptacles and jot down anything you find may cause an issue to give to your electrician.
  • Schedule an Inspection - using your list, contact the electrical professionals at John's Electric to schedule a thorough and comprehensive inspection of your home's entire electrical system. Your electrician will be able to address any issues you've discovered as well as provide you with information on repairing anything you may have overlooked.

Is aluminum wire a fire hazard and what should I do about it?

Monday, March 11, 2019

From the mid-'60s to the early '70s, electricians in many new or remodeled homes installed aluminum wiring to feed branch circuits from the main panel to outlets and lighting fixtures.  What was later discovered is that while continuous runs of aluminum wire didn't present problems, when those wires were connected to light switches, outlets and other wires in junction boxes, the connections deteriorated and became fire hazards.

What others say about John's Electric Service

Service was above and beyond excellent. Stuck with us and the power company until the true root of the problem was found. Worked around our schedule and budget restraints. Left things clean and was very respectful. Would definitely recommend him and use him again.

What a pleasure it was dealing with Aubrey of John's electric! We had a breaker that would not reset. Aubrey arrived at our house at exactly the time he said he would. He had the problem diagnosed in under a minute and had us back to normal with all of our garage outlets in under 5 minutes. I know that all service calls can't go that quickly, but he sure found the problem right away and got it fixed immediately. I would strongly recommend this company.
