Is aluminum wire a fire hazard and what should I do about it?

From the mid-'60s to the early '70s, electricians in many new or remodeled homes installed aluminum wiring to feed branch circuits from the main panel to outlets and lighting fixtures. Is aluminum wire a fire hazard? What was later discovered is that while continuous runs of aluminum wire didn't present problems, when those wires were connected to light switches, outlets and other wires in junction boxes, the connections deteriorated and became fire hazards.

In 2019, it is often tempting to believe homes with aluminum wiring are safe since the wiring hasn't been a problem for 30 to 40 years, but that is now a dangerous misconception. The more time these old connections have had to deteriorate, the worse the problem is.

The safest way to find out if your home has aluminum wiring is to hire a professional. But, you may be able to identify aluminum wires in your home by looking to see if any cables are labeled "AL" (Aluminum).

If your home does indeed have aluminum wiring, several options are available, but usually, one of the following two are recommended:

Option 1: Complete replacement of the home's electrical wiring system. This option is typically far too expensive for most homeowners, sometimes costing upwards of $8,000 or more.

Option 2: Replace every single connection in every single outlet, junction box, and switch with copper pigtail using a Copalum connection. Only certified electricians trained in Tyco Electronics (the Copalum manufacturer) are allowed to rent the tool required for installation.

What is GFCI protection and how is it maintained?

Monday, May 6, 2019

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) devices are required in specific areas of our homes by law.  We must all have GFCI protection in certain parts of our house such as our kitchens, bathrooms, unfinished basements, outside our homes as well as our garages. GFCI devices monitor the electricity between the ungrounded (hot) and grounded (neutral) conductors. If there is an improper imbalance between the two conductors the GFCI will stop the power from exiting the receptacle, so no one gets an electrical shock.

Solved a problem thus restoring my power to some areas of my house

Had a number of outlets not working and lost AC in 97 degree weather--he came twice the 1st time approx 1hr 20 minutes--wasn't able to locate problem---this I put on myself as I was unaware of putting a breaker box behind a vanity that hadn't been move since purchase of my house. Second visit after some search found problem 1hr

OK the skinny--I think he was professional--on time

Was upfront on costs

Problem once the second box was located was an easy fix so thought a touch high on price--that said it was upfront and had I had the answer to location as I should have I think the billing would be much lower so will put this on myself. In other words I don't think he would have ripped me off

Bonus was after having 4 others trying to blame AC and being told I needed a new one---he said everything in my problems was electrical--and viewing my AC said it was fine--no need of new unit--for the moment if right saving me $$$$

Fixed our outside meter box. Less than 2 hours work.

They did wonderful. Alabama Power was a little hard to deal with, but they arranged everything. Pretty good communication. I thought they were a little pricey, even with the coupon. They made the repairs and the power was back on in less than two hours.
