October is Fire Prevention Month

fire prevention fire safety According to the US Fire Administration, fires kill more than 4,000 people in America each year and injure approximately 20,000 more. Nearly 2 million fires are responded to by US fire departments, with three quarters of them occurring in homes.
Take advantage of the focus of October Fire Prevention to be sure your home and family are protected from and prepared for a fire. Here are some safety tips from John's Electric to help keep your family safe and to avoid injury should a fire occur:

1. Smoke Detectors / Alarms - Widely available and inexpensive, smoke detectors / alarms need to be installed in all of the rooms of your home and tested monthly to be sure they are working properly.
2. Avoid Electrical Fire Hazards - Never overload circuits or extension cords. Never place wires or cords underneath rugs or in high walking traffic areas. Check the fit of plugs in wall outlets to avoid loose electrical connections. Poor connections can cause a fire in minutes from overheating.
3. Home Fire Sprinklers - when used in combination with properly functioning smoke detectors / alarms, fire safety sprinklers greatly increase the chances of surviving a fire. They are inexpensive and can lower your home insurance rates and even increase your property value.
4. Always have an Escape Route - create the quickest and safest route should fire occur in any room of your home and practice it with your family regularly. Teach everyone to stay low to the floor and check with the back of your hand for hot doors to avoid backdraft.
5. Choose the position of your Appliances Carefully - Keep your TV and other appliances away from windows with curtains. In case of a wiring problem or loose connection, a fire that reaches the curtains can quickly spread. Rain or moisture that reaches the appliances from the window can cause wiring malfunctions as well.
6. Contact us today for a complete fire safety plan for your home and be safe this October.

Is aluminum wire a fire hazard and what should I do about it?

Monday, March 11, 2019

From the mid-'60s to the early '70s, electricians in many new or remodeled homes installed aluminum wiring to feed branch circuits from the main panel to outlets and lighting fixtures.  What was later discovered is that while continuous runs of aluminum wire didn't present problems, when those wires were connected to light switches, outlets and other wires in junction boxes, the connections deteriorated and became fire hazards.

Aubrey did an excellent job with moving our electrical main service. He coordinated with Alabama Power and the Hoover inspectors and everyone was there when they should be. He knew that we needed a special disconnect and ordered the right one. We gave him a key and trusted him to be in and out of the house and yard when he needed to. He kept us informed, did a quality job and went over and above to come out to check on things for us after hours one evening and teach us a few things. Reasonable price as well. A true professional and I will recommend him again.

Aubrey upgraded our electrical fuse panel, put in an updated outside service panel, replaced the main service line from the outside panel to the inside fuse box, and installed several outlets. His original estimate was complete and accurate. He brought our electrical system up to code and made several recommendations for changes and upgrades that we had not thought of. He worked with our schedule, was on time and very professional, and left our home as clean as when he arrived. He was extremely conscientious and reliable. We very highly recommend John's Electric and will definitely use them again.
